ABOUT

Jess LC began when I was fifteen years old at a local pool when I inadvertently sold some [ugly] ankle bracelets. I promptly decided to earn “fun money” selling jewelry instead of babysitting. Fast forward twelve years and I’m now running my business full-time since graduating in 2007 from the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. In 2011, I also expanded from jewelry to include bags, stationery, scarves, and iPad cases as well. After lots of carefully selected intentions and perseverance, it is becoming the lifestyle accessory business of my dreams.

My purpose, to help people design lives with intention, became clear when I was a college junior. At that time I was extremely dissatisfied with myself. I sought out happiness and perfection through each bag, shirt, candy bar, and guy in my life. As you can imagine, none of these ill-conceived and largely unconscious methods worked.

Then one day I heard a quote about Michelangelo regarding the David statue. He was asked how he designed such a phenomenal statue out of a piece of stone. Michelangelo said it was easy to carve the statue because he saw the potential within the stone and he simply needed to remove the layers hiding the beauty. Hearing that, my life clicked instantly.

The best Jess I was searching for wasn’t found pretending to be someone else or by buying something new, it was underneath all the layers of “stuff” in my life. I now define “stuff” to be clutter, unloved/unused/unneeded possessions, bad relationships, negative thoughts, you name it – whatever isn’t serving a positive purpose in our lives is hiding our best selves.

More About Makeunder My Life

In January of 2009 I started Makeunder My Life (MML) as a place to share my journey towards the simplified and intentional life. My goal for the future is to share the MML mission worldwide through web, books, video, you name it! Though I started the blog focusing on “exfoliating” unnecessary clutter, I now write about my journey to design my life, career, business, and thoughts with intention.

Here is a link to the best of MML so you can quickly search some of the best, most helpful posts. Or, if you are working a day job while you prepare for your dream job (I call this a Midnight Hustler), please hop over to our Midnight Hustler Hall of Fame to get connected to others in the same boat.
