helping haiti, makeunder style

helpinghaiti

I’d like to start by saying that what I’m about to reveal, though not of extreme importance, was never intended to be shared here on Makeunder.

However, given the recent earthquake in Haiti, I feel that if by sharing this intention, more aid goes to those in need, it is well worth revealing.

My Private Donation Intention

Since I don’t have a steady salary, I have found it difficult to incorporate the idea of tithing or creating a “personal donation budget” into my life. Sure, through Jess LC I donate to a variety of causes with Soc Chic, but personally I don’t do as much as I would like. So one of my intentions for 2010 is to donate $20 to a different cause each month. It’s not a lot of money, really just the cost of my dinner at Matisse last night, but it’s $240 a year more than I’m personally donating right now.

I thought about sharing this intention earlier, but decided to do it for myself in a quiet, personal way. Something I’d do “for me.”

But once I got an email from Jeanine at Aphro Chic about the Bloggers Day of Action for Haiti, I knew sharing this intention is my way of helping the cause.

How I Donated to Help Haiti

So I promptly went to the Red Cross website and donated my January $20 donation to the International Response Fund which will give aid to people in Haiti.

I also saw an even easier way to donate to the Red Cross is by texting “HAITI” to the number 90999 and they will make an automatic donation of $10 towards the relief effort. Here is the info on the texting method. The $10 donation is made through your cell phone bill. Pretty simple, right? I could have just texted “HAITI” twice to make the donation rather than using the website. Which, might be a good idea if the servers are full on the Red Cross website.

If you have been thinking about doing donating, whether it be once a month or not, hopefully you consider helping Haiti in this time of need.

    Hi Jess,

Texting was the easiest way for me to donate and I definitely recommend it. Great post and thanks for helping.

Thanks for posting this Jess! I’ll be donating via text.

FYI Canadian readers: if you have Rogers or Fido as your service provider you can text “HELP” to 1291 to donate $5.

Jess, I just wanted to share something with you that someone once shared with me after I expressed my concern/worry about not being able to really tithe or give charitably due to my lack of income. It has changed my life in terms of how I think about giving. The wording is a little tough for some to understand, maybe, but I think you will ‘get it’.

    Malachi 3:10 reads:

“Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and try me now in this,” says the LORD of hosts, “If I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it.”

    Blessings, Susan

Besides donating my own money to Haiti, I will continue to pray for them. Lifting everything up to Heaven for them.
