people who lead fulfilling lives

Wed, Jul 15, 2009

Every now and then I find a quote in a book that strikes a deep chord. The truth or essence of the passage seems undeniable. I’d like to share one such passage from a book that I found in my apartment building’s laundry room. Not the most glamorous place to find meaningful direction, but who’s to judge?

The passage below is from the book The Purpose of Your Life by Carol Adrienne. I have the passage saved on my computer and printed underneath a tray on my nightstand. Whenever I feel the need for a bit more direction, I read the passage. Enjoy. fulfillinglives

People Who Lead Fulfilling Lives

“People who lead fulfilling lives generally have found a sense of “home” in what they do. They have a philosophy of life that connects them to a larger vision. They accept that life is a continuing challenge. More often than not, they are able to live according to their own schedules, choosing work that is interesting and complex enough to keep them engaged. They get excited about being effective and about being stretched to learn new things.

They have a few good friends who understand their vision and perhaps even share common aspirations. They are not driven by urgency, competition or the demands of the ego.  People who are happy have found an internal harmony by participating fully in the world from the platform of their strengths and passions, having come somewhat to terms with their foibles and weaknesses.

For the most part, they do what they do best. They tend to be wholly involved and present in the moment, and not diminished by pride, envy, fear, or self-loathing. They usually know when they have made choices that are in alignment with their inner sense of moral rightness. They look forward to what life will bring each day, and, at the same time, honor their commitments and do what the say they will do. They care about the little things of life, and they also feel a part of the universal order.”

This is great! I have been thinking about you lately because I am feeling frazzled between motherhood and blogging and life in general- maybe your readers (or just me!) need a refresher in living with intention… every day I think, what would Jess do? Likely make a simple list and stick to it… am I on the right track? You come across as so composed… I need composure these days! :)

I think above all, when we are giving and living with a grateful heart, we find fulfillment. Above all, sharing and giving of one’s talent and expertise is very important to me. Living graciously and minding one’s manners is also important. To live in a civilized way, with beauty and culture in mind.
    Thank-you for sharing.

Oh I love this! So inspiring! It truly is a gift to find your passion and to subsequently feel you are living a purposeful and fulfilling life! Thanks for the reminder :)

So beautiful. And such a great reminder.

@ Jill: Oh my gosh. That is such a nice thing to say. And you totally have me nailed. My day is generally structured around a wipe board with things to do that I wipe off as I go. It’s simple, but for some unknown reason if it goes on that magic wipeboard, it gets done. If not today, then tomorrow.

As for composure, some days are better than others. I definitely have been known to struggle with worrying about what others think and holding myself to impossible (read: perfect) standards.

You are doing a great job, keep it up!

@ PVE: As usual, beautifully put. I think sometimes I find myself (and probably others) have a tendency to let compliments roll off my back and dwell on only negative feedback.

Being able to receive good things is the only way they can come. Right?

@ Plush Palate and Rachel: Glad the passage struck you, too!

I am very pleased to have found your blog (through The Lovely List). I aspire to lead a meaningful, fulfilling life. I’m not quite there yet, but I do try! Mostly I try to set a good example for my children and be a person they will be proud of – when they are old enough to understand the concept!
